I may have mentioned this before, but I just have to say it again. Northrend is gorgeous. Gorgeous in a way that puts the rest of the game to shame. Just when you thought you’d seen all the good there was to see in Azeroth and Outland, Blizzard comes along and drops Northrend in our lap and makes everything we saw before look a bit plain and dull. Let’s start off today with a question about Northrend’s look:

A similar glow effect exists in Northrend’s Howling Fjord zone. It appears there day and night throughout the sky.

A Dwarf Priest is one of my very favorite WoW blogs. The author writes about exactly one topic – Priests – and she does it very well. So when she says that Shadow Priests are “on the endangered list“ in Wrath, I think there’s probably some truth to that. The core argument is that Shadow Priests’ utility is not at the point it was once at (group mana regen is not unique any more; Shadow is not as important for raid synergy), but their DPS has not (yet) been increased accordingly.

One reason why Shadow’s DPS is low has to do with spell coefficients. You know how items with +damage or +healing (or now spell power) always say “adds up to [however much] damage”? The coefficient on a spell is what determines exactly how much is applied. Generally it’s based on cast times – Greater Heal gets 86% of +healing applied, while Flash Heal only gets 43% – but there are exceptions for spells with added effects, such as Mind Flay and its snare.

So here’s yet another example of how mutable Death Knights are at the moment: This week, I decided to spec Blood all week and make a genuine effort to learn all the ins and outs I could so that I could bring you a good solid overview of Blood for this weekend’s column.

Then build 8820 came along, and Blood, while having the same basic mechanics, got a rather big hit to its health regeneration and DPS abilities, and I’m left trying to figure out the extent of the damages. In the end, I don’t think Blood was horribly nerfed in this build, but it might have been slightly overnerfed.

The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the Gladiator (Brutal, Vengeful, Merciless, and otherwise), to interview some of the top Arena fighters in the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup, and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune, and Netherdrakes.

Maimage, a Warrior on Korgath, is one of the many high-ranked players competing in the Arena Junkie’s Olympic contest. He’s sitting right now on the team AJOlympics at 2321. Maimage is one of few, the proud — the Vengeful Gladiators. Like many such players, however, he also has a fairly high alt priest named Maimgler, hovering around the 2K rating mark.

We caught up with him, as we tend to do, and Maim was helpful in supplying some insight about the way the Arena works. Check out what he had to say after the cut. Since he’s more experienced with his Warrior, his answers are mostly focused on that class. That makes him the first Warrior for the Colosseum, and his answers contrast interestingly with previous week’s speakers.

If you read WoW Insider, or really any WoW site, there’s really no way you can be unaware of the Wrath cinematic’s debut. Some people loved it, some people hated it, some people can go either way on it. I found that pretty interesting, because I personally loved it. While watching it, I actually thought to myself, “Wow, Daniel is gonna love this.” Turns out he wasn’t a fan of it at all!

I loved the fact that it was more heavy on the story than the previous trailers. The Burning Crusade cinematic had some story, but it all seemed like it was just an excuse to kill some people and then throw in a quotable one-liner. Not that there’s anything wrong with one-liners. Yelling ‘You are not prepared!’ with a few dozen other nerds at BC’s midnight release was pretty sweet.

I think that the trailer missed on the adrenaline factor, which is what made the previous trailers so fun. Daniel had some gripes with the Lich King’s character, but I think that oomph of adrenaline would’ve pushed it from ‘awesome’ to ‘completely amazing.’ It needed something that gets you pumped. I adored it, but I came out of it going “wow, that was neat” and not “Hell yeah, I’m off to kill some undead, woohoo!” I think the only thing I would have done differently is add some conflict. A battle between the Horde/Alliance and the Scourge, maybe. Quick snippets of random pairs duking it out would’ve taken away from the ‘epic’ of this trailer, but I like the idea of a massive battle raging down below. That likely doesn’t jive with the storyline they’re working with since that dragon is going to be an actual character and/or boss in Wrath, but it would have been nice anyway.

What about you guys? Let’s say you were given the opportunity to rewrite the script for the whole thing, what would you do? Would you scrap the whole shebang and start over, is it fine how it is, or are you somewhere in between?

Lore Sjöberg at Wired’s Alt Text  talked yesterday about the Zhevra mount you get as part of the Recruit-a-Friend program. It’s a pretty fun read. He talks about the myriad of vanity items, and how these items can be such a motivator for WoW players, even though they don’t really affect your gameplay at all.

I do want to add a point to his article, though. The new Recruit-a-Friend benefit isn’t just the Zhevra. For me, the ability to gain triple-XP is the huge motivator. I’m involved in a Guild that’s doing it’s best to truck through Zul’Aman content. I can’t wait to get a good friend of mine involved in the fun, but getting from 0 to 70 is going to take a while.

Even with the speed levelling records out there, going from zip to end-game isn’t going to happen overnight. So, while my friend will be starting after Labor Day weekend, there’s a little bit of delay before she’s rocking out to left-handed Nalorakk. The triple-XP bonus — and the ability to teleport me to her when she needs help — overcomes the big hurdle to getting a friend started.

This is the real power of the new Recruit-a-Friend benefit, in my opinion. The Zhevra’s cool and all, but the XP bonus and teleportation feature makes getting my friend involved three times faster. The benefit doesn’t just reward getting friends involved, it empowers us to get our friends involved.

I didn’t realize until right now that that was Radiohead’s National Anthem sneaking into the WoW Insider Show’s theme song — shows how much I listen to the cool mix of Warcraft sounds that Duncor put into our intro. You may recall a while back that we covered the problem with bear tanks in Wrath of the Lich King. In short, the new shared gear itemization between Rogues and Feral Druids is leaving bear Druids incredibly starved for armor and stamina. Extra stamina and armor is wasted on rogues, but is mandatory for Bears. Bears, therefore, have suffered.

Ghostcrawler has now let us know that the dev team has noticed the problem. The justification, of course, is as usual: They want less useless stuff to drop. Ideally, itemization should be tight enough that there is a high chance of people getting stuff they can use off a boss, even if that means 12 other people in the raid can use it as well.

So Blizzard apologized for Failoc and the ticket fiasco, offering up 3,000 more tickets to the massively popular BlizzCon 2008. I’d like to think Mike Schramm’s insightful essay on the ticket travesty (along with the public’s general uproar, of course) had a bit to do with that, and now Blizzard has announced the method by which fans can purchase a ticket to the hottest show in Anaheim this October.

Learning from the experience, Blizzard announced early on that the next batch of 3,000 tickets would be sold via lottery, giving everyone a fair chance at attending the event. There are quite a few limitations, such as having an active Blizzard Account that was created on or before August 12, when the first batch of tickets sold out. Note that a Blizzard Account isn’t the same as your World of Warcraft account or an account for other Blizzard games. It’s an account made specifically for their online store, so wannabe attendees who haven’t created an account are flat out of luck.

Also out of luck are residents of countries that aren’t the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, or South Korea. So yeah, all you Blizzard fans in Zimbabwe, I’m looking at you. Alright, the Philippines isn’t on that list, either, so we’re all on the same unwelcome boat. Just like the Wrath Beta, Blizzard will hold an opt-in period for Blizzard Account holders and will pick 1,500 lucky chumps from those who opted in, allowing the purchase of up to 2 tickets each. I finally logged in to the Wrath beta for the first time last night, and frankly, was a little disappointed. Like a lot of players, I really enjoy seeing content live, and playing around on the beta feels like I’m somewhere i’m not supposed to be — things are not done (it’s a little unnerving to see a Blizzard game without impeccable amounts of polish on it), and there’s no flow yet from the old world to the new — you’re dropped into Northrend and it’s like you’ve jumped forward a few months in game continuity. Something is missing.

But having been to the strangely buggy future, I can tell you one thing so far. Blizzard will do something they haven’t done for almost two years now: every character will very likely get their talent points back around the Wrath of the Lich King release. Sure, it probably seemed obvious to most, but this is a bigger deal than you might think — free respecs used to be a pretty common occurence, as almost every patch, Blizzard would refund talent points to at least one or two classes. But that was changed right around the last expansion, as Blizzard has opted for smaller class changes rather than content patch revamps. We haven’t seen a talent point refund in a long time.

If this release is like last time, we won’t necessarily see our talent points refunded upon installation, but rather around a big content patch right beforehand. If you were planning on respeccing for Wrath, you might want to wait a bit — while respecs still aren’t free all the time, we are apparently getting one done for us.
